Is your ego getting in the way of marketing your business?

Simply defined, ego is an exaggerated sense of self- importance. This will kill your business and your relationships faster than anything. Don't let ego stand in the way of your success.

Ego says it's all about us. But it should be all about our customers and the people we serve.

You need a little bit of an ego and confidence to survive in the business world. But it shouldn't stand in the way of closing a sale or picking up the phone to make a sales call or doing whatever it takes to grow your business.

Too much ego can keep a potential client from doing business with you and cause existing clients to look elsewhere.

The key is to find a balance between being "over the top" with your ego and just exuding confidence in your abilities and what you are offering.

Here are a few tips to help you keep your ego in check:

1. Let other people do the talking. Use testimonials and word of mouth referrals to let your target market know you are the expert.

2. Stay out of the perfectionist trap. There is no such thing. Get over it.

3. Practice humility. Know your place when dealing with potential clients and existing customers. Treat others as they would like to be treated. You need to come across as the expert but check your ego at the door.

4. Listen and respect what the other person is saying.

5. Keep an open mind about everything. You do not have to be "right" all the time. Give someone else a chance to shine.

Be confident in your skills and abilities and keep your ego in check. Know when it's time to turn it up and when it's time to tone it down a little. Don't let your ego cost you money in your business.
