People keep asking me how they can get their website up in the search rankings of Google, Yahoo, and Bing.
There is no simple answer to that question because it involves many different techniques and strategies. It also requires time for most of those things to take effect.
But here are three things you can do that will help improve your ranking:
1. Use great keywords in the title line on your website. The title line is that line at the top of the web page just above the URL. If you go to my website site at www.mikecoleman.net, you will see "Mike Coleman: Marketing Consultant, Digital Media Consultant, Speaker, Author". You may have to get your web designer to make this change for you. You just add this to the <title> tag of your HTML code.
2. Make use of the ALT tag. This is also located in your HTML code and your web designer can do this for you if you don't have the technical skills to do it. In your HTML, go to where any of your images are located and you will find the ALT tag. Place keywords between the quotes of your ALT tag that are relevant to what you do. For example, in my case I have marketing consultant, speaker, copywriter, and a few other relevant words on all my images.
3. Create relevant content. This is what I mean by relevant content. It’s very simple. If someone searches for someone doing what you do, does all the content on your website relate to that. And do you have keywords in your website copy or the main body of your website that relate well to whatever word or phrase they keyed into the search engine.
There are also a couple of tools you will find useful as you are working on improving the SEO or search engine optimization of your website.
SKTOOLS, located at google.com/sktool, can be used to help you find relevant keywords.
Google Analytics can be used to track how well your website is performing. If you have a website, you should be using Google Analytics to track the effectiveness of your website. Just go to www.google.com/analytics and sign up for an account.
This is a very, very basic introduction to improving your SEO or search engine optimization. Internet marketing takes time and effort. But you will get a return on your investment if you exercise a little patience.
Implement the three tips I just gave you, or hire someone to do it for you, and you will see results. It does take time for some of these things to take effect, but you will see improvement in your ranking with time.
