Last Friday at midnight, I shut down my computer and didn't turn it back on until this morning. Three days away from work. Three days of relaxation. Not talking about work and, after the second day, I was starting to not think about work (very much).
Why is that a big deal? Because most people can't do it. And I have to admit, it was very difficult. But it had to be done. I can't remember the last time I took a whole weekend off and didn't do something related to my business.
I spent time with my wife, watched movies, took a short road trip, went to a park, played guitar, and had a very relaxing weekend away from work. I basically "unplugged".
The first day was difficult because I am used to checking email first thing in the morning and working ALL THE TIME! As some other business owners do, I work all day, in the middle of the night, and on weekends.
One of the best things about being in business for yourself is you can work anytime you want. One of the worst things about being in business for yourself is you can work anytime you want.
Can you relate? When was the last time you "unplugged"? When was the last time you took two days away from your computer, away from work, without thinking about what had to be done?
This is one of the most difficult things for most business owners and entrepreneurs to do, especially if you are a solopreneur with no employees and you are the only one who keeps things going.
No matter how passionate you are about your business, it's important to stay connected with your family, or your significant other, without discussing business or thinking about your business. That is the very least you can do for the ones who support you and encourage you when things are not going so well.
I realized something else after being "unplugged" for three days. The world kept turning and when I turned on my computer this morning, there were no disasters or world changing events that had occurred as a result of me being gone.
I feel revived, refreshed, relaxed, and in control. I feel better about my business, and some of the stress I was feeling last week has disappeared. I have a new perspective on life and on my business.
When was the last time you unplugged and took a few days off?
Take some time today and schedule two or three days away from your business. It may be the best thing you have done in a long time for your business and for your personal relationships.
