Here are a couple of questions I got last week after sending my newsletter touting the importance of being involved with online social media. "Do you know anyone who has actually made money from their online social networks?" and "How do I know I'm not just wasting my time on this stuff?"

There are numerous examples of speakers getting speaking gigs after meeting planners viewed their Facebook profiles. I was talking to a couple who owns a local tanning salon, and they went on and on about how much money they had saved as a result of their involvement with social media. They were able to drastically cut their advertising budget by thousands of dollars. Facebook actually has a marketplace where you can sell merchandise, and they also offer pay-per-click advertising similar to Google AdWords. A friend of mine, who uses Google AdWords, told me he is actually getting more traffic through his Facebook pay per click ads than he's getting from Google AdWords. If you talk to a few people, you will find numerous examples of how people are directly and indirectly making money using online social media.

Now that you know it's not a waste of time, here are a few tips for making the most of your online social presence:

1. Use LinkedIn to do market research. Sign into your LinkedIn account, move your cursor over "More...", and select Answers from the drop down menu. Ask your market what they want and need.

2. Create a Facebook Fan Page. Log on to your Facebook account, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on “Advertising”. At the top of the next page, click on “Pages”. Then click on “Create a Page”.

3. Use Facebook to promote any events you may have coming up. Sign into Facebook. Click on "Settings". Select "Application Settings" from the dropdown menu. On the next page click "Create an event".

4. Take advantage of tools like ping.fm to update all your social networks at once.

5. Spend 10 minutes a day or one hour a week updating your social networks. It doesn't take a lot of time.

All of these tools are free. They don't take a lot of time to implement and maintain. A little time invested in online social media can reap many rewards including more contacts and more business.

To Your Success,
