Leaders are fascinated by the future. You are a leader if, and only if, you are restless for change, impatient for progress, and deeply dissatisfied with the status quo.

Whether you are a solopreneur, small business owner with employees, or professional selling your services, at some point you must assume the role and exhibit the qualities of a leader.

You have to make decisions, be the role model for your employees, manage your time, delegate tasks to your employees (or yourself), and the list goes on.

Let’s take a look at 7 qualities of a great leader:

  1. Leaders have commitment and the initiative to get things done. We have all met people who talk a good game but never seem to do anything. Commitment separates the dreamers from the doers. Leaders make a commitment to the task at hand and get it done. Passion fuels commitment.

  2. Leaders have focus and a vision for where they want to go with their life and with their business. Creating a solid vision statement for your business will take you a long way towards success.

  3. Leaders are self-disciplined. Especially if you are a one person operation, you must have the discipline to manage your time and to stick with it when things get tough.

  4. Leaders have the heart of a servant. They put customers first, and they put their employees first.

  5. Leaders are competent and teachable. They are constantly looking for ways to learn more, do more, and to become the expert in their chosen field.

  6. Leaders recognize the value of developing and maintaining solid personal and business relationships. They use social media and one-on-one meetings to make sure those relationships are maintained.

  7. Leaders are great communicators. They are able to communicate their brand and their vision to the marketplace.

There are many more qualities that leaders have, but the ones I just listed are the bare essentials of being a competent leader.

Are you a leader? Are there areas in your leadership abilities that need improvement?

Always be looking for ways to become a better communicator, a better role model for your employees, more disciplined, and to develop the qualities that are so essential to being a great leader. Always be looking for that edge.
