I was talking to a friend of mine about six months ago. He was telling me how busy he was and how he could barely keep his head above water. When I asked him what he was doing to market his business, he replied, I'm too busy to think about marketing. I don't have time. I'm just making money and cashing checks."
Fast forward to today. He is struggling to get new business and his bank account is dwindling.
What could he have done differently to make sure he has income even in the bad times? He could have blocked out 20 minutes a day to work on marketing and promoting his services.
Marketing in both good times and bad times is an essential part of creating a successful business.
No matter how busy you are today or how much money you are making, you still have to market and promote yourself and your business like a rock star. You cannot get lazy in this part of your business.
Marketing is not something you do periodically or when business is slow. It's something you do every single day you are in business ... no excuses.
You have to do something every day, even if you only make a couple of phone calls to follow-up with a hot prospect or call a current client and ask for a referral.
The key is to build momentum in your marketing so it's something you are aware of and do on a daily basis.
It generally takes a few months for a marketing campaign to really take hold in the marketplace so you can't wait until you "need" to market your business or services.
Here are three tips to help you keep the momentum going in marketing your business or services:
1. Block out a specific amount of time every day to work on your marketing ... even if it's just for 15 minutes.
2. Plan your week in advance. Know what you are going to do on any given day to promote your business or services.
3. Make sure you are spending your time on tasks that will make you money. This will free up time you thought you didn't have for marketing. Hint: Spending 2 hours on your Facebook account or 3 hours reading email is not a productive use of your time.
We generally have time to do the things we really want to do. Make marketing a priority and something you want to do. Put marketing at the top of your to do list and watch your business grow even in a bad economy.
