I was recently watching CBS Sunday Morning and a segment where they interviewed Joe Ades got my attention. Joe was known as "the peeler guy".
Joe became very successful by selling $5 peelers on the streets of New York City and was adored by everyone who knew him. He sold peelers by day and was known as a socialite by night. He was often seen at the trendy jazz clubs and lived a very comfortable life. The person doing the interview said he had been selling his $5 peelers so long, he was actually a local landmark.
He said something during the interview that I thought was brilliant in its simplicity. He said, "If you do it right you get paid. If you do it wrong you don’t get paid. It’s really that simple.”
There is a lot of wisdom in that statement by Joe Ades. Making money and creating a successful business can be summarized in those three sentences.
Joe passed away in February 2009. His daughter has decided to continue the tradition and is selling Joe's peelers on the streets of New York City just as her father had done in years past. She wants to carry on his legacy.
If we just take a moment to look around and just listen, we can find wisdom and knowledge in all kinds of places. I am thankful for the simple wisdom spoken by Joe Ades in that interview on CBS Sunday Morning.
