One of the social networking tools I use is LinkedIn. LinkedIn has an excellent market research tool called “Answers”. Sign in to LinkedIn and move your mouse over “More…” at the top of the page. Then click on “Answers”. This will take you to the Answers page where you can submit a question that people can reply to.

I recently submitted the following question through LinkedIn “Answers” – What is the biggest challenge faced by anyone who is starting a small business? The number one answer was fear. Money was second. Of course this is an informal study, but all you have to do is talk to a few people to validate this response. Fear is without a doubt the biggest issue facing anyone starting a small business or anyone already in business, even if they are established and successful.

What can fear do? It can be paralyzing. It can keep you from taking the necessary action to resolve any challenges you may have in your life or in your business. It can cause confusion and make decision making difficult, if not impossible. It can cause you to retract from friends, family, and the other people in your life who want the best for you.

How do people deal with fear? Successful people learn to overcome fear. Unsuccessful people are incapacitated with fear. It really depends on your perspective. Successful people don’t see failure the same way as unsuccessful people. Successful people generally view failure as an opportunity to learn. Their mistakes are just results or outcomes. Unsuccessful people on the other hand take failure personally. They sometimes look at failure as permanent. They attempt something, it doesn’t work, and they quit. In reality, they could be very close to achieving success in their endeavor if they would just take a step back, see what went wrong, learn from their mistakes, and move forward.

Here are six ways to overcome fear:

  1. Change you perspective. Change the way you look at mistakes and failure. Look for the lesson you should have learned and move forward.
  2. Take action. This is probably the most powerful weapon you have to overcome fear. Just get moving and gain momentum as quickly as possible.
  3. Give yourself a break. Don’t be so hard on yourself. It's not permanent, and it's not the end of the world regardless of what you think.
  4. Persistence will go a long way towards helping you overcome fear. Don’t stop. Keep moving forward. Check out John C. Maxwell’s book “Failing Forward”.
  5. Don’t take it personally. Failure or making a few mistakes does not make you a failure.
  6. Write down your fears on a piece of paper and live with them for a few days. Are they real and justified or just something you made up? The basis of fear is all in your mind. Control your mind and you control your fear.

Don’t let fear paralyze you and keep you from taking action. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Embrace failure and embrace your mistakes. Learn what you can from all your actions and move forward with the confidence that you now have more information that will keep you from making the same mistakes twice.
